The next opportunity’s just around the corner

Marco Odermatt was aiming for a World Cup medal in the Super-G, but had to content himself with fourth place. This is just a missed opportunity – the World Championships are continuing and the next chance is coming soon.

The next opportunity’s just around the corner

Marco Odermatt’s gestures and facial expressions gave us a hint: after crossing the finish line, the Nidwalden racer wasn’t sure what to make of his 68 seconds on Courchevel’s Eclipse course. No doubt about it: he had a good race, but unfortunately not quite enough for a first World Championships medal. Three competitors went on to be faster than Odermatt. In the end, he was just 11 hundredths of a second behind the bronze, 36 behind the silver and 37 behind the gold.

The few minutes that Marco Odermatt, wearing bib number 7 and the favorite for gold, spent watching his competitors (starting at 8, 9 and 10) knock him off the podium must have been bitter for the 25-year-old. Having won four of the six Super-Gs in the World Cup and finished the other two on the podium, he remained without a medal in the Super-G at the World Championships. In the interviews after the race, Odermatt spoke of a “solid performance” in a “close-run race” in the “season’s shortest Super-G”. The disappointment of the World Cup’s best Super-G racer to date in winter 2022/23 was understandably palpable – and audible.

But now for the good news: the Nidwalden athlete doesn’t have much time to dwell on things and lose momentum. Because on Sunday, the ambitious Stöckli racer has his next chance with the downhill, and in the second week, the giant slalom, in which he’ll again be the one to beat.

After today’s event, Marco Odermatt will be freshly focused and highly motivated to tackle the upcoming tasks with the pressure that exists for a medal contender, but also with the certainty that, as an Olympic champion and winner of the overall World Cup, he no longer has anything to prove. Marco Odermatt can and wants to win a World Championship medal. There remain two opportunities in 2023.
